„The Golden Nut“ is a contest for children at the age of 6 to 14 years.
The Golden Nut can be awarded to children who have managed to do something exceptional. Subjects can be e.g. sports, mathematics, art, biology, history and so on; the award is not restricted to a specific subject. Application can be made by filling
in application forms which are published by various media in the Czech Republic (TV, radio, Internet) several times throughout the year. By the end of each year, a jury selects the best 30 candidates who are then invited to Ceska televize (the Czech TV station under public law) to participate in the finale. Traditionally, the 10 winners are awarded on the 1st January of each year. The show is telecasted directly before the New Year’s speech of the President of the Czech Republic.
The project´s aim is to encourage young people to achieve targets that ersonal effort is appreciated and is rewarded by society.
„The Golden Nut“ is a non-profit project with the aim to present children to the public who have media skills. Therewith, the project is in contrast to the current observation that media are more interested in „spectacular“ (and negative) subjects such as child prostitution, drug addiction or child delinquency. The important role of the project has been acknowledged by Czech ministries (the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Culture), which support the contest by assuming the patronage. The project is organised by agency Futura.
